This year's C hristmas Lectures series at the Royal Institution of Great Britain focuses on the theme of the chemistry of the world around us. Dr Peter Wothers is 'The Modern Alchemist' and, over three lectures, he will explore the elements of Air, Water and Earth - three of the original Greek elements that so fascinated alchemists for centuries. The first lecture, Air, will cover everything from the oxygen around us, the ozone gas in the atmosphere, greenhouse gasses and how these compounds hold the key to life on the planet. Water, the second lecture, will explore just how essential to life it is before the third and final lecture, Earth, which will take a deeper look at the rocks and materials that form planet Earth. Not surprisingly, this an unmissable series for those with a love of chemistry and it's also a great opportunity for those who wish to further educate themselves on the subject.

Head to www.rigb.org for further information on how to obtain tickets. If you're visiting the lectures from out of London, check out our hotels near the Royal Institution for some fantastic accommodation deals.
