One of the highlights of the Christmas season is this all-new Cinderella production of the classic ballet setting by Frederick Ashton to the music of Prokofiev. The Ashton / Prokofiev Cinderella is widely regarded as the best the world has seen.
The score is a masterpiece, wonderfully evocative of the magic world of fairy tales, and the book by Ashton managed by a happy chance to combine elements of social commentary and farce with the traditional story - this is by far the most interesting version in terms of characters, with really evil sisters and stepmother and a properly idiotic Prince to offset the perfect heroine. These complexities add to the enjoyment of a musical and visual spectacular by drawing the audience in.
The Royal Ballet have staged this version before and this Christmas special is one of the slickest, most impressive productions yet. For audiences of any age, with even the slightest feeling for music, drama or magic, this Cinderella is a real treat. A very expensive but once in a lifetime experience - truly fantastic.
