Award-winning Syrian composer Zaid Jabri and librettists Yvette Christianse and Rosalind Morris present four scenes from 'Cities of Salt' in the Linbury Studio of the Royal Opera House. Taken from Zaid Jabri's adaptation of Peter Theroux's translation of the seminal novel by Abdelrahman Munif, this new opera explores the impact of the discovery of oil on a small desert community. The year is 1932. Oil has been discovered in the Gulf states. The Bedouin men and women of one small oasis are caught in the whirlwind of forces embodied by the oil industry and the local oligarchy; a new epoch is being born.
About Linbury Theatre
Part of the Royal Opera House , the Linbury Theatre was completely refurbished in December 2018 revealing, "a handsome new venue" ( Financial Times ) with a "warm, wood-lined interior" designed by architects Stanton Williams. Part of a three-year, £50.7 million programme of works, dubbed the 'Open Up' project, the Linbury Theatre - which seats up to 406 people - offers a smaller space than the main Royal Opera House stage.
