For a band who often perform more than one hundred live shows per year, it's a relief that Clutch have decided to include a night at Camden's KOKO as part of a European tour this autumn. Now on to their ninth studio album, the Maryland-based "beardy blues-smiths" (NME) have remained loyal to their beliefs since their debut back in 1993, infusing classic stoner rock with blues and heavy metal while maintaining a clear sense of humour and not taking themselves too seriously (nowhere more evident on 1998's brilliant The Elephant Riders, with its surreal songs of yetis, soapmakers and civil war dynamics). Vocalist and lead guitarist Neil Fallon (yes, the beard is real) recalls Soundgarden's Chris Cornell at his peak, while the band pulls off an intriguing blend of Kyuss-style drone rock and ballsy Black Sabbeth-esque riffs and solos. Clutch's appearance at KOKO precedes a December double by other leading proponents of the stoner genre in Monster Magnet and Karma To Burn. All we need is Fu Manchu to get in on the act and we'd have a complete set.
