Collecting Gauguin: Samuel Courtauld in the '20sThe Courtauld Gallery's summer showcase for 2013 delves into the works of Post-Impressionist master Paul Gauguin, widely celebrated as one of the most important artists of the 19th century. This exhibition was assembled by the pioneering collector Samuel Courtauld (1876-1947) and includes major paintings and works on paper as well as one of only two marble sculptures ever created by the artist. Two important works by Gauguin (1848-1903) have been loaned to supplement the Courtauld's private collection: Martinique Landscape (Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh) and Bathers at Tahiti (Barber Institute of Fine Arts, University of Birmingham). Collecting Gauguin offers an opportunity to consider the contribution of Samuel Courtauld in developing the artist's reputation in this country - a reputation that only started to flourish following his death.

Manet's 'Bar at the Folies-Bergeres', Van Gogh's 'Self-Portrait with a Bandaged Ear' and Renoir's 'La Loge' are just a few of the celebrated artworks displayed at the Courtauld in the Strand Block of the glorious, 18th century Somerset House. 530 paintings, 7000 drawings and 15,000 prints combine to create one of the most notable collections of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and Old Master works on display today.
