Comics Unmasked: Art And Anarchy In The UKThis major exhibition at the British Library will explore some of the darker and more complex themes to emerge from the UK's rich tradition of comic books and graphic art. While the exhibition will examine some of the early precursors to the British comic tradition such as William Hogarth, George Cruickshank and Punch magazine, it will mainly focus on post-war material such as The Beano, Viz, Action and Eagle but also look at the counterculture tradition of the 1970s as well as the pioneering work of Alan Moore, Bryan Talbot, Neil Gaiman and Grant Morrison, who helped redefine the intellectual and artistic possibilities of the form with their revolutionary work on 2000AD, Watchmen, Batman, From Hell and many others. The exhibition will therefore demonstrate that the UK was both an early innovator of comics as well as an ongoing leader in the field.
