The sun-soaked Cypriot shores will sweep into London this month. Head North to Ally Pally to sample an exotic slice of Cypriot life. The festival is designed to promote the produce, traditions and culture of this beautiful Mediterranean island.
The wine festival itself is a 2500 year old Cypriot tradition. Originally established in Limassol, the festival took place to honor Dionysus, the god of wine and Aphrodite, the goddess of love. During these feasts, men worshipped the gods but also had a jolly good time swigging wine and having a bit of shindig.
The tradition arrived on British soil in the 1980s and since then has ballooned in popularity.
Food and wine experts from Cyprus are flown in, including world class winemakers, growers, purveyors, authors, food and wine commentators and critics.
Visitors are invited to knock back fine wine made from fertile grape vines baked under the Cypriot sun. The wines tend to be deliciously sharp and pungent and are often warmly received by even the most harsh of critics.
On top of supping wine and tasting food there is also plenty of entertainment to look forward to. Buoyant live music and rowdy Greek dancing are always particularly popular with festival-goers.
The venue is ideal. Alexandra Palace is one of the most versatile and visually unique venues in London. Set within 196 acres of glorious parkland, a trip up here on a summers day is always a thoroughly enjoyable jaunt.
