Jerry Herman's 1969 Broadway musical, Dear World, makes its British debut at the Charing Cross Theatre. Set in post-war Paris, the story tells the unfortunate tale of Countess Aurelia, a woman living a lonely existence under a Parisian bistrot and driven mad by memories of a lost lover. When oil is discovered under the streets of the city, things take a turn for the worst and the Countess, along with an odd collective of acquaintances, take matters into their own hands in a bid to save her home and the rest of the French capital from corporate greed. Marking the first time the production takes to the stage outside of the US, this new adaptation is directed and chreographed by theatre veteran Gillian Lynne (Cats, Phantom of the Opera, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) and stars Tony Award-winner Betty Buckley as Countess.
About Charing Cross Theatre
With just 275 seats, the Charing Cross Theatre is one of the smallest in the West End. Tucked away under the arches beneath Charing Cross station, this Off-Broadway style theatre, which was rebuilt in 1989, is renowned for its intimate productions and cosy auditorium and is fast becoming a favourite amongst seasoned theatre-goers.
