This is a bopping rock 'n' roll musical; one that, like We Will Rock You and Mamma Mia!, is piggybacking on the success of a body of songs. While decent storylines are sidelined in favour of squeezing in yet another hit, the attraction of these shows comes from the toe-tapping, feel-good fun of cruising through classic tunes. As this kind of "nostalgic escapism" goes, Dreamboats and Petticoats at the Savoy Theatre is an enjoyable night out, "producing a warm glow from a bygone era" (EdinburghGuide.com). Based on the smash hit album of the same name and its follow-up release, the musical skips through songs from the 50s and 60s, featuring hits such as Only Sixteen, Runaround Sue and Let's Twist Again. Set at an Essex youth club, the frolics and fortunes of wannabe music stars Norman and Bobby accompany this journey through the wonder years of rock 'n' roll.
