These two works were seminal in the development of dance and opera in the early years of the 20th century and, nearly 100 years on, they still have the power to create a stir on the stage. Certainly not for the faint-hearted, Bartok's one-act opera Duke Bluebeard's Castle and Stravinsky's ballet The Rite of Spring burst onto the English National Opera stage, the London Coliseum, to show us their innate intensity. The Bartok offering inverts the archetypal fairytale by turning the mysterious castle into a chamber of chilling nightmares, where there is no happily ever after for Bluebeard's new wife Judith, who insists on unlocking every one of her husband's guilty secrets until she is consumed by them and cannot escape. From this dark, psychological opera, we enter the realms of ritual where another maiden finds herself oppressed - this time offered as a sacrifice - in a riot of passion and physicality. Edward Gardner conducts.About London Coliseum - English National Opera (ENO)
London Coliseum is a magnificent historic building and an excellent venue in which to enjoy the soaring sounds and high drama of some truly thrilling operas. This impressive theatre, which started its life as a venue for variety shows, is now - conversely - indistinguishable from its artistically first-class company in residence, the English National Opera.
