There can't be many bedraggled Irish stand-ups who have been named "the greatest comedian, living or dead" by French newspaper Le Monde so Dylan Moran, so scornful of the Perrier Award he won years ago as a 24-year-old newcomer, should take it as a compliment. Best known for his turn as the misanthropic curmudgeon bookseller Bernard Black in his Bafta-winning Channel 4 sitcom Black Books, Moran has a delightful capacity to meander and a sumptuous imagery to match. After his sell-out UK tour, the star of Shaun of the Dead - whose film breakthrough came as Rufus the book thief in Notting Hill - returns to The West End stage with his What It Is show at the Apollo Theatre. The former florist (for a week) mulls over life's joys and disappointments in a wonderful display of observation which The Scotsman recently describes as having "more comic gems in one performance than most comedians on the Fringe will produce in their entire run."About Apollo Theatre
The first West End theatre of the Edwardian Age, the Apollo has a pleasingly over-the-top design that takes in facades, statuary, and a gypsy coat-of-arms that was intended to bring good luck. Vertigo sufferers may wish to know that the balcony at the Apollo is said to be the highest in London, a design that was intended to improve the acoustic for musicals. More about Apollo Theatre
