John Heffernan - recently seen in Harold Pinter's The Hothouse at Trafalgar Studios - takes his first leading role at the National Theatre playing the king in Christopher Marlowe's erotic and violent play Edward II. Vanessa Kirby, who has previously appeared in BBC2 drama The Hour and the Young Vic production of Three Sisters, plays Queen Isabella, while Kyle Soller, who won the Evening Standard theatre award for outstanding newcomer in 2011, will play Gaveston, Edward II's lover who he calls back from exile after his coronation. Directed by Joe Hill-Gibbins, the production, first performed in 1592, gives a contemporary take on Marlowe's original text. A behind-the-scenes exploration of how power corrupts.
