Irish actress Fiona Shaw directs her second opera, Elegy for Young Lovers, at the Young Vic following her operatic directorial debut of Riders to the Sea, staged at the Coliseum two years ago. This latest piece is another collaboration with the English National Opera, staging Hans Werner Henze's 1961 rarely performed play in which a poet, Gregor Mittenhofer, emerges from an unhappy time with the Hitler youth and heads to the Austrian Alps to take inspiration from an elderly woman haunted by visions. In this version Hans Werner Henze's musical score is translated into an English libretto co-written by WH Auden and Chester Kallman. Hilde Mack, the elderly woman, awaits the return of her husband who went into the mountains and never came back. Set in a hotel in 1910, it's a suspended, dream-like space where artistic inspiration can lead us down dark avenues.About The Young Vic
Knocked together out of breeze blocks for a minimal budget in 1970, Lawrence Olivier's experimental theatre was intended to last for five years, and provide an inspiration for the new generation of performers. But this was an experiment that worked and, years later, the Young Vic remains south London's premier venue for the contemporary, the shocking, the controversial, and the bizarre.
