Elizabeth I and Her PeopleThe arts flourished during the 45-year reign of Elizabeth I, who attended the first performance of William Shakesperes A Midsummer Night's Dream. However, this exhibition is as much an illustrated social history of a period economic prosperity, when explorers Francis Drake and Walter Raleigh's maritime discoveries led to new trade routes in the East Indies and Middle East and an age of colonisation.
As well as lesser-known portraits of The Virgin Queen herself, the exhibition incorporates images of courtiers William Cecil and Bess of Hardwick, poet John Donne, Francis Drake, and, most curiously, the first ever portrait of a guinea pig. Clutched in the hands of a child from a wealthy Spanish family, the exotic pet would have been brought to Europe by traders travelling between South America and Spain. Other characters represented in the exhibition include Elizabethan lawyers, goldsmiths, merchants, playwrights and artists, who represented the wealthy middle class that burgeoned during her reign.

About National Portrait Gallery

The National Portrait Gallery houses portraits of significant figures from the late 15th century to the present day. This isn't the place to come for serious works of exceptional artistic merit - the overriding aim of the National Portrait Gallery is to reflect the status of the sitter, not the artist - but where else in London could you hope to find The Beatles, Henry VIII, Sir Richard Branson and JK Rowling all hanging out together? The appeal of this gallery (opened in 1856) rests simply in its comprehensive commemoration of British history from the late 15th century to the present day through the medium of portraiture.
