For three days this March, the Emerson String Quartet brings their Grammy Award-winning all-Bohemian Intimate Letters programmes to Queen Elizabeth Hall. Now in its 34th year - "it's like a marriage, but without the sex," they claim - the New York-based quartet's Grammy count has now reached nine, more than any other chamber music ensemble in history. These three concerts feature much-loved and rarely-performed works by Dvorak, Janacek and Martinu. The first concert in the series showcases works inspired by the rich tradition of Czeck folk music, and features the legendary Israeli pianist Menahem Pressler. The second concert involves pieces of work inspired by Dvorak's love for Kamila Stosslova, a young girl 40 years his junior who had a profound influence on the composer in his last decade. The final concert captures the essence of Dvorak's time in America and includes pieces viewed by the composer as musical postcards. "With musicians like [the Emerson String Quartet] there must be some hope for humanity," says The Times. 2 March 2010 7.30pm, Queen Elizabeth Hall Emerson String Quartet A.
