English National Ballet: A Tribute To Rudolf NureyevIn July 2013, for five performances only, the English National Ballet dances A Tribute to Rudolf Nureyev, marking the 75th anniversary of Nureyev's birth, and the 20th of his death. Nureyev, "changed for ever the way we viewed the role of the male ballet dancer in the west" says English National Ballet's artistic director, Tamara Rojo who has put together this programme. The bill includes Mikhail Fokine's Petrushka, which Nureyev first danced in 1963, and Maurice Bejart's Song of a Wayfarer, created especially for Nureyev. The evening ends with the company premiere of Raymonda by Marius Petipa (creator of The Sleeping Beauty creator) which was staged by Nureyev himself in Italy in 1964, and again in 1969 when he adapted the third act, the wedding scene, for the Royal Ballet.
