Alan Opie stars as Shakespeare's cheerfully debauched knight in Verdi's classic retelling of The Merry Wives of Windsor. This is a delightful opera with Verdi's light-hearted, witty score perfectly matching the drama and characters who are both funny and, that rarest of things in opera, believable.
Amanda Holden's translation of this great comic opera manages to keep the wit of the original intact - it is, after all, a very English comedy of wily women and foolish men. Matthew Warchus' ebullient staging makes this a gloriously raucous affair, but also captures beautifully the quiet tragedy of Falstaff's hatred of his ageing, weakening body.
This intelligent, unpretentious production is a great way to see it, especially with the mouthwatering prospect of Alan Opie in the title role.
