Franz Ackermann has led a nomadic life for much of the last two decades years, travelling the world in order to document his impressions of city life with journal-like drawings that he calls 'mental maps'. These drawings inform his vast abstract paintings, which use acid bright colours and swirling graphics usually melded with mind maps and architectural forms, to create a feverish chaos that is meant to reflect the social reality of increasingly globalised societies. The themes of tourism, globalisation, urbanisation, particularly their darker aspects, have underpinned much of his work since early 1990s. He has named the 1997 Luxor Massacre, when over 60 people were killed at one of Egypts most popular tourist attractions, as being a key event in the development of his work.
