To mark the sixtieth anniversary of the arrival of the 'Windrush' generation of immigrants in Britain in 1948, the Imperial War Museum hosts an exhibition telling the personal stories of the West Indies people during the First and Second World Wars. Featured in the From War to Windrush exhibition is Sam King MBE, the Jamaica-born mayor of Southwark. After serving with the Royal Air Force in Britain for eight years he returned to Britain on the ex-troopship MV Empire Windrush, later becoming a Labour councillor. His is just one of the tales originating from the historic Windrush crossing, told through historical material and personal memorabilia.
