Visitor Information
As Charles Dickens chronicled everyday life in early Victorian London in writing so George Scharf painted the scenes described in his watercolours and drawings. Now, with help from the Prints and Drawings Department of the British Museum, the delightful John Soane's Museum is putting on a free exhibition of works by this less well known artist. His vivid, detailed drawings show an architectural accuracy in the way they capture every aspect of life from small boys throwing snowballs to street vendors. As Scharf's career progressed so the city changed dramatically. Through his pictures we can see the old Georgian city as it was transformed by the creation of new public spaces and buildings, gas lighting opening up a whole culture of nightlife with the opening of the first music halls. Leisure activities such as visiting galleries and museums also became popular at this time and Scharf recorded these developments too. Though Scharf died in poverty with his final years donminated by money worries, the name may well be familiar - his son, also called George Scharf, went on to become the first director of the National Portrait Gallery.
