Nearby Ghost Forest

Intended to serve as a timely reminder ahead of the Copenhagen climate talks, a Ghost Forest art installation is being erected in Trafalgar Square to highlight the effects of deforestation. Artist Angela Palmer has taken ten real rainforest tree stumps from Western Ghana, most with their buttress roots still attached. Moving the stumps to Trafalgar Square and positioning them next to Nelson's Column will provide a poignant reminder of how magnificent the trees once were - the statue, at 169 feet (over 50 metres) tall, is the approximate height these trees would have been in the wild. In December, the artwork will move to Copenhagen for the United Nations conference on climate change. You can also see Angela's related works at a free exhibition at the Wellcome Collection where 'Breathing In' - the result of a two-year project on the physical effects of climate change - is on display from 20th October to 22nd November.About Trafalgar Square
Lord Nelson, Britain's greatest military hero, and the mighty lions that surround him, pay testament to the position of Trafalgar Square at the heart of the capital, the heart of the nation, and, at one time, the heart of an empire that controlled three fifths of the world.
