Giulio Paolini: To be or not to beItalian artist Giulio Paolini (b.1940) believes that a work of art is not just itself in the here and now but also the record of earlier traditions, has led him to investigate art's relation to the past.

Paolinis installations are deeply rooted in art history from the Renaissance to today, from plaster casts of classical sculptures shattered on the ground to photographs of iconic paintings by Lorenzo Lotto, or to inquiries into modern gestural painting.

Driven by an exploration into the nature of images, the making of art and the role of the artist, he asserts that to be authentic, a work of art must forget about its author. Giulio Paolini: To Be Or Not To Be is organised in collaboration with MACRO, Rome.

About Whitechapel Gallery

Designed in a distinctive Arts and Crafts architecture style by Charles Harrison Townsend, the Whitechapel, Britain's first purpose-built arts gallery, is renowned both for the beauty of its light, airy space and for embracing the local community in its work. Founded in 1901, extensive refurbishment saw the gallery, reopened in April 2009, double in size. More about Whitechapel Gallery
