One hit wonders overly reliant upon their larger-than-life frontwoman, or a fierce rock 'n' roll trio in the ascendency? Either way, Beth Ditto's Gossip head to the HMV Forum to kick off the UK leg of a mini European tour promoting their fourth album, Music For Men. Critics are divided on the new material, many claiming the album's songs are a little underweight - understandable given 16-stone Arkansas lesbian Ditto's blossoming friendship with wafer-thin model Kate Moss during the recording of Music For Men. But new single Heavy Cross - their best since Standing in the Way of Control - has proved a hit, The Times calling it "a slab of slinky, super-confident funk genius". One thing's for sure: live, Gossip are a sight to behold, with Ditto invariably shoehorning her ample frame into tight Lycra before stripping to next to nothing, exposing more muffin tops than the counter at your local Starbucks.About HMV Forum
Once a gorgeous art deco cinema, the HMV Forum is now an essential mid-sized rock venue. It's got everything you want from the North London rock scene, with superb bands week-in week-out, and a fully-lubricated, enthusiastic and music-loving crowd. Well-designed and well-organised it manages to avoid the bar queues that are a feature of so much London gigging, while the main stage has great sound and a design that brings bands far closer to their audiences than you have any reason to expect in a venue this size.
