The original Broadway cast are transferring to London's West End for this latest production of Hair, the 1960s musical written by out-of-work actors James Rado and Gerome Ragni and based in New York during the height of the Vietnam War. First shown in April 1968 in New York Public Theatre in Lafayette Street, it was last staged in London in September that year, one day after the abolition of theatre censorship. The timing allowed for certain nude scenes to be included which would have been banned for being too outrageous for the stage just the day before. Set to music by Galt MacDermot - songs include Let The Sun Shine In, I Got Life, Hair and Aquarius - Hair is a musical very much of its time, featuring anti-war sentiment of the sixties, flower power and free love. With the backing of Sir Cameron Mackintosh - a runner on the original West End production - Hair the musical is set for a well-received revival.About Gielgud Theatre
From the outside, the Gielgud Theatre is an impressive sight, towering four storeys over Shaftesbury Avenue, its height further emphasized by the turret on top. The interior is also magnificent, with richly-decorated pillars supporting the boxes and lavish Baroque ornamentation. Built in 1906 and known as the Globe Theatre for most of the 20th century, it was renamed after the great actor Sir John Gielgud in 1994. More about Gielgud Theatre
