The Foundling Museum welcomes the innovative ensemble Janiculum for a night of arias by the Italian composers who threatened Handel's unique position of supremacy in England. Renowned for bringing history alive through music, Janiculum presents this intriguing programme of music from the likes of Ariosti, Bononcini, Castrucci, Corelli, Lanzetti, the Scarlatti brothers and Handel himself. When he was 25, the German-born composer moved to London where he enjoyed unfettered support by the royal family and the country's musical institutions. But his elevated position was constantly threatened by a host of now relatively unknown Italians who themselves enjoyed periods of intense popularity. Handel Among His Rivals is a programme of Baroque arias and instrumental music unpublished and largely unperformed since the 18th century which shows just what Handel was up against during the height of his career. Named after Rome's second tallest hill, Janiculum are Marie Vassiliou (soprano), John Trusler (violin), Graham Walker (cello) and Jane Clark (harpsichord). About The Foundling Museum
The Foundling Museum is one of London's real hidden treasures. Originally established in 1739 as a hospital which looked after abandoned children, the museum now tells their story. Using oral testimony, original artefacts and photographs, their history is explored and compared to the lives of contemporary children. More about The Foundling Museum
