A special performance of Handel's most famous creation, Messiah, takes place at Westminster Abbey on the 250th anniversary of the composer's death. The Choir of Westminster Abbey will be joined by period-instrument orchestra, St James Baroque and four internationally acclaimed soloists: Aylish Tynan, Sarah Connolly, Jonathan Lemalu and Paul Agnew. The performance will be conducted by James O'Donnell, Organist and Master of the Choristers at Westminster Abbey. Handel's strong association with the Abbey came from the 40 years he spent living in London, during which he most notably wrote the Coronation Anthems for George II's coronation in 1727. Handel is buried in Poets' Corner at the Abbey underneath a statue of the composer holding the musical score of one of Messiah's best-loved soprano arias, 'I know that my Redeemer liveth'. The concert is to be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and across Europe.About Westminster Abbey
Elizabeth I, Mary I, Mary II, Edward the Confessor, Edward I, Edward III, Edward VI, Henry III, Henry V, Henry VII, James I, George II, Richard II, Charles II and William III are buried in Westminster Abbey. And there's some speculation over whether the remains of Edward V (murdered by Richard III?) is among the 17 monarchs who rest here - DNA testing has proved inconclusive. More about Westminster Abbey
