This significant exhibition entitled Handel the Philanthropist marks the 250th anniversary of his death on 14th April 1759. He was laid to rest, according to his wishes, in Poet's Corner in Westminster Abbey. The classical musician and composer was also one of the governors of The Foundling Museum in the 18th century when it served its original purpose, as a hospital. Fittingly, given that partnership, the focus of this exhibition is on Handel's charitable work as well as his music. The art exhibition is complemented by a programme of concerts and events to celebrate the landmark anniversary of the great composer's death.Image: George Frideric Handel by Thomas Hudson National Portrait Gallery, London
About The Foundling Museum
The Foundling Museum is one of London's real hidden treasures. Originally established in 1739 as a hospital which looked after abandoned children, the museum now tells their story. Using oral testimony, original artefacts and photographs, their history is explored and compared to the lives of contemporary children. More about The Foundling Museum
