Seasoned stage actress and star of Mike Leigh's Secrets & Lies Brenda Blethyn takes on the lead role in Haunted, Edna O'Brien's drama in which a young woman inadvertently comes between a husband and wife. The Irish novelist met the actress five years ago when Blethyn was appearing in Marsha Norman's play Night Mother in New York. From there a play - Haunted - and a friendship sprang forth. Inspired by O'Brien's early years in England, Haunted makes the neat, semi-detached houses of suburbia its setting, and reveals what goes on behind the net curtains. Mrs Berry, played with pathos by Blethyn, is a childless middle-aged woman prone to speaking in Shakespearean snipits. Her husband (Niall Buggy) in the throes of a mid-life crisis, is captivated by a young elocution teacher who gives him lessons in exchange for his wife's clothes. All of which combines to create a tale of obsession, dreams and desire, passion and regret.
