The Chinese artist, born 1986, came to prominence in 2009 when he took over a lumber mill and employed a team of migrants to boil and reduce over 100 tonnes of Coca-Cola over the course of a year. The dried out lumps of Cola, which resembled an apocalyptic landscape of dark matter, were placed in the Beijings Wall Art Museum and taken as a comment on the nature of globalised consumerism.
Subsequent artworks include Mr Fantasy (2012), a sculpture of the artist dressed as former Communist leader Chairman Mao laid out in a glass cabinet, and Death of Marat (2011), a sculpture of the dead Ai Weiwei, a Chinese contemporary artist who is still very much alive. The artwork references Jacques-Louis Davids neoclassical painting of the French revolutionary Jean-Paul Marat.
