Michael Grandage's new production of this glorious, Tony Award-winning musical brings decadent 1920's Berlin to the Donmar stage. It's 1928 and, at the Grand Hotel, guests and staff are suffering from an excess of hope and optimism. The stock market is booming and the city's decadent high life is in full swing.
Michael Grandage and choreographer Adam Cooper have done a great job of creating the raucous atmosphere of this grandiose musical in the tiny space of the Donmar. Half-a-dozen intersecting plots (the pregnant secretary, the bankrupt tycoon, the dying bookkeeper, and many more) create a thrilling sweep through the life of a wild city, though often taking a bitter and tragic turn that is far removed from conventional musical fare.
Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio (Maid Marian in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves), is particularly effective as an ageing ballerina, who discovers new love, but all the cast acquit themselves superbly in a show that is another triumph for the West End's most consistently successful theatre.
