Henry MooreTate Britain stages a major exhibition dedicated to the great artist Henry Moore, bringing together over 150 works by the world renowned sculptor, famous for his monumental bronzes and drawings of London during the Blitz. By the start of World War II in 1939, Moore was already recognised as an established artist and was commissioned as an offical war artist, drawing the crowds of Londoners sheltering in the London Underground - images that now have an iconic status. The exhibition also includes the largest number of Moore's great reclining figures carved in Elm wood ever to be brought together, a subject which recurs throughout his work in stone and bronze sculptures as well as wood carvings. The pairing of mother and child was also a prominent and repeated theme and one which he referred to as his 'fundamental obsession'. The exhibition also looks at the influence of world cultures in his work, through his primitive masks and abstract sculptures of the 1930s. Writing in a catalogue introduction for Moore's second exhibition in 1931, Epstein said, "For the future of sculpture in England Henry Moore is vitally important." This exhibition only proves the point.
