Henry VI: Three PlaysThe three plays of Henry VI, under their original titles, are performed at the Globe as part of a UK tour this summer, starring Graham Butler in the title role and directed by Nick Bagnell. The Bard did not set out to write a trilogy and each play can be enjoyed without the knowledge of the others. Harry the Sixth sets the scene as divisions appear at the highest level following the death of Henry V. The Houses of York and Lancaster charts the opposition to the saintly Henry VI by his nobles - and in particular the ambitious Richard, Duke of York - and by the Kentish rebellion, which opposed England's social inequality. A bloody power struggle ensues in The True Tragedy of the Duke of York, which pits the King's party, led by the fearsome Queen Margaret, against the Yorkists, led first by Richard and then his sons Edward and Richard of Gloucester. All three plays blend bold characterisation, black comedy, rhetorical power and touching pathos as Shakespeare creates a world devoid of ideology where the heroes are not kings but formidable women, such as Joan of Arc, or rebels, such as Jack Cade.

Harry the Sixth: 12.30pm (24, 27 Jul, 25 Aug, 4, 8 Sep), 7.30pm (23 Jul, 21 Aug, 3 Sep)
The Houses of York and Lancaster: 4pm (24, 27 Jul, 25 Aug, 4, 8 Sep), 7.30pm 22 Aug, 5 Sep
The True Tragedy of the Duke of York: 2pm (6 Sep), 7.30pm (24, 27 Jul, 23, 25 Aug, 4, 6, 8 Sep)
