Caricaturist, water colourist, engraver and draughtsman, Thomas Rowlandson was one of the leading artists of Georgian England and, known for his gently humorous pieces, soon became commonly recognised as a satirist. With Rowlandson basing his works on subject matters such as the absurdities of fashion, the perils of love, political machinations and royal intrigue, the paintings and prints displayed at The Queen's Gallery will provide an insight into life at the turn of the 19th century. Some of the pieces on display were purchased by George, Prince of Wales who, the butt of both Rowlandson's and many other caricaturists' jokes, often purchased pieces in an attempt to keep them out of the public eye.
