This summer, the Serpentine Gallery presents Jeff Koons: Popeye Series featuring key works by the well known American artist since the 1980s. Famous for his giant inflatable silver bunnies and over-sized puppy dogs made out of flowers, Koons is a well-known and somewhat controversial figure on the contemporary art scene. But despite his prominence and popularity - with works selling at eye wateringly expensive prices - this is his first solo exhibition at a public British gallery. Grouped thematically, these pieces reveal the recurring Koons themes of consumerism, taste, banality, childhood and sexuality. His 1991 painting and sculpture series, Made in Heaven, showed him with his then wife Ilona Stallerin (a former porn star) in explicit sexual poses. This work won't be on show at the Serpentine, instead the Popeye Series, an on-going project since 2002, features the readymade inflatables as well as collages and paintings.
