Paul Smith liked one of John Tierney's paintings, pink 'Hollywood store', so much he turned it into a silk scarf and hosted Tierney's 2011 exhibition in the Paul Smith Store in Melrose, Los Angeles. Now, two years later, the photo realist painter has his first solo exhibition in Britain at The Osborne Studio Gallery, presented by The Horsebox Gallery. Previously a criminology professor at Durham University, Tierney changed profession in 2010 devoting more of his time to oil painting. As well as images of Paul Smith's LA shop, his subject matter includes the urban landscape of Los Angeles, New York, Helsinki - where his three sons live - and the Joshua Tree National Park which he has visited many times. "I'm attracted by the light and shade, the architecture of LA and the sharp delineation of sky and buildings and mountains," the artist explains.
