Jubilee - A View From the CrowdAs we are in the grip of Diamond Jubilee fever, celebrating Queen Elizabeth II's 60 years on the throne, Kensington Palace gives us an insight into the last time the country celebrated such an anniversary of their queen. In 1897 it was Queen Victoria who had been on the throne for six decades - the first monarch to do so - and through Jubilee - A View From the Crowd we get the viewpoint of the people who celebrated her 60 year reign. Central to the celebrations was a grand procession on 22 June 1897 in London, which took Victoria from Buckingham Palace to St Paul's Cathedral for a service of thanksgiving (parallels can be drawn with today's Service of Thanksgiving), before crossing over the river, through Southwark and back to the Palace. 50,000 troops and 3 million people filled London's streets and the exhibition captures the festive mood of the celebrations through a range of specially selected objects which help transport visitors back to 1897. With London celebrating another Diamond Jubilee in 2012 it's an opportunity to see how the country celebrates such rare occasions. Kensington Palace also has a new permanent exhibition, Victoria Revealed, which reveals more about the life and reign of the queen who was one of the palace's most famous residents.
