Tragedy and humour don't often go hand in hand, but Juno and the Paycock manages to capture both emotions to great effect in this stylish production at the National Theatre. Sean O'Casey's play delivers emotion on many levels with its intense portrayal of a downtrodden tenement family in war torn Dublin. The play centres on Jack Boyle, our unemployed and often inebriated hero, and his long suffering wife Juno who struggles tirelessly to support her family. Their son has been crippled fighting for the IRA and their outlook looks fairly bleak until the news of a potential inheritance arrives and looks set to change everything. This co-production sees the National Theatre work in partnership with Irish theatre the Abbey for the first time.
