Malevich: Revolutionary of Russian ArtA major retrospective of Kazimir Malevich, leading pioneer of abstract art in Russia whose work was banned in the Soviet Union in the Thirties, opens at Tate Modern this July. The exhibition is described as "unprecedented in its scope" with some 500 works on display promising to "shed new light" on Malevich's career. Kiev-born Malevich was a key figure in abstract art and a succession of avant-garde movements in the early half of the 20th century. His style of severe geometric abstraction, which he called Suprematism, was a precursor to the development of Constructivism. The exhibition, which was first shown at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, is the largest Malevich retrospective in 25 years and "could prove as uplifting as late Rembrandt", according to The Spectator who included this in their list of 'Art shows you simply mustn't miss in 2014'.

About Tate Modern

Located along the banks of the River Thames in the former Bankside Power Station, originally designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1947, the architect of Battersea Power Station, Tate Modern opened to great acclaim in 2000. Since then it has welcomed millions of visitors through its imposing doors. More about Tate Modern
