Visitor Information
Inked drawings and computer generated graphics with a political undertone document the social, economic and political climate in an Arab world rocked by unrest. The observational work of Sudanese cartoonist Khalid Albaih has been heavily featured on various websites and blogs, revolutionary social network campaigns and most recently major news publications the New York Times and the Economist. Clever and brilliantly in tune with the unfolding events throughout the region, one of Albaih's early pieces "The Sudans Break Up" produced at the time the 2011 Sudanese referendum for an independent South Sudan was passed, shows a South, personified in the form of a female geographical map, breaking up with a sad and disheartened North. Another, "Winds of Change" reveals a black figure which appears to be resisting heavy gales in the attempt to achieve change - a metaphor of the solidarity among countries fighting for fairer governing policies in the Middle East and North Africa. Albaih, who has spent most of his adult life living on Doha, presents 90 of his works complied of black and white canvases for the first time in London as a part of the Qatar UK Year of Culture. The initiative celebrates the long-standing partnership of the two nations and has brought about a year of annual events encouraging a cultural exchange. The exhibition title "Khartoon" is said to be derived from a conjunction of the word 'cartoon' and the Sudanese capital 'Khartoum.' The artist gives an exclusive talk on the opening night of the exhibition that is hosted by the Crossway Foundation, followed by a performance from Iraqi Canadian rapper The Narcicyst.
