King Charles IIICharles has to decide how to rule, following the death of the Queen and a lifetime of waiting in King Charles III, Mike Bartlett's latest drama which imagines the accession and reign of Charles, Prince of Wales. The award-winning British playwright (who has won titles for 'Artefacts', 'Cock', and 'Love, Love, Love', and was BAFTA nominated for his TV series 'The Town') looks specifically at the period immediately after the Queen's death, when Prince Charles ascends to the throne and imagines the many troubles he encounters after so many decades as an heir. The production, which premiered at the Almeida Theatre in the spring and transferred to Wyndham's Theatre in the autumn of 2014, reunites Bartlett and Goold for the first time since their work together on 'Earthquakes in London' at the National Theatre in 2010. If that hard-hitting play about climate change and corporate corruption is anything to go by, they won't dodge the big questions around democracy. The cast includes Nicholas Rowe, Oliver Chris, Richard Goulding, Adam James, Katie Brayben, who appeared in Goold's recent critically acclaimed American Psycho, and Olivier Award nominated actor Tim Pigott-Smith in the title role. Shortlisted for Best Play at the Evening Standard awards along with Rona Munro's Scottish history trilogy, The James Plays, King Charles III is up alongside works from two American Playwrights, Lynn Nottage's Intimate Apparel and The Nether, a futuristic fantasy by Jennifer Haley which transfers to the West End in January 2015.

 

About Wyndham's Theatre

Wyndham's Theatre opened in Charing Cross Road on 16th November 1899 and was owned by Charles Wyndham. One of its biggest hits was Sandy Wilson's The Boy Friend which ran for 2078 performances before transferring to Broadway. During the sixties and early seventies, stars such as Alec Guinness, Vanessa Redgrave and Diana Rigg all took to its stage. More about Wyndham's Theatre
