Kingston's excellent month-long book festival is largely dedicated to non-fiction. With only one or two events a day, this lacks the buzz that surrounds the more celebrated literary occasions, but it is a well-programmed event, full of worthwhile authors. This year, the recently opened Rose Theatre has been added to the venues across Kingston and it's where you'll find Christopher Rush talking about his novel 'Will' based on Shakespeare's life (Wednesday 23rd April, 1pm). Other highlights include Michael Billington, drama critic of 'The Guardian' newspaper, discussing theatre and society (Friday 2nd May, 1pm, Rose Theatre), Alison Weir on her latest book about John of Gaunt (Wednesday 7th May, 7.30pm, John Lewis) and Andrew Lycett on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (Tuesday 6th May, 7.30pm, Kingston Museum). There's also a good showing from children's authors including an afternoon with Dame Jacqueline Wilson on Sunday 4th May, 2.30pm at the Rose Theatre - suitable for ages eight and above.
