The mini season of South African works at the Tricycle Theatre features an exciting pair of productions, not least because both are British premieres and both are bold, deeply-felt explorations of history and culture. Following on from Karoo Moose, Koos Sas: Last Bushman of Montagu is David Kramer's Afrikaans musical telling the true story of Koos Sas, the sheep-rustling bushman who was shot on the run in 1922, having escaped jail where he stood accused of murdering a white farmer. Sas's story does not end there, however, with his body dug up as 'a good example of the San people' and his skull taken to America and eventually ending up on display at the Montagu Museum. This is an "inventive, layered and beautifully executed" (Fleur du Cap Awards) re-imagining of the story. The voices of Sas, whose indigenous inheritance of the land has become a crime, and the policeman, representative of the forces riding roughshod over the native people, are set against a backdrop of dehumanising grave-robbing and trading.
