A modern opera that is not weird, not in-yer-face, not even in English, but "haunting and resonant" (The New York Times). Kaija Saariaho's L'Amour de loin received its world premiere at the Salzburg Festival in 2000 as the one to watch and it comes to the Coliseum for its UK premiere this July with a troupe of acrobats in tow. The story is stirringly simple; the princely troubadour Jaufre Rudel from Aquitaine dreams of a faraway love - the opera's title literally meaning 'Love from afar' - and Clemence, the Countess of Tripoli, becomes the focus of his desire - and vice versa - but both are afraid of reality spoiling their idealised, unknown love. The love soars across the East-West divide with Amin Maalouf's deep, poetic French libretto - his "words invite music" said The New York Times and Kaija Saariaho has not disappointed with "a lushly beautiful score". ENO music director Edward Gardner conducts.
