Mark Rylance (Jerusalem, Boeing-Boeing), David Hyde Pierce (Niles in Frasier) and Joanna Lumley (Ab Fab actress and Gurkha guardian) star in La Bête, David Hirson's award-winning comedy about the battle of wits between a stuffy dramatist and a street performer in 17th century France. Written in 1991, La Bête won the Olivier Award for Best Comedy the following year and this revival - with a strong cast and directed by Matthew Warchus (God of Carnage, Boeing-Boeing, Art, The Norman Conquests) - is sure to be just as popular. In this comic play princess Conti (Joanna Lumley) persuades theatre guru Elomire (David Hyde Pierce) to add street clown Valere (Mark Rylance) to join his company of actors, injecting the rather staid acting troupe with some bawdy fun. The artistic differences between the elitist Elomire and the vulgar, egotistical Valere result in a fierce battle played out on the stage to hilarious effect. Following its limited run in London at the Comedy Theatre, La Bête transfers to Broadway.About Harold Pinter Theatre
The Comedy Theatre's 1881 interior is one of the oldest in London and one of the most charming, in spite of the damage wrought by an ill-considered restoration in 1954. The Renaissance-style auditorium, with its wooden panels, and gold ceiling and wallpaper, still retains many original features, while the unpretentious exterior is the most attractive and unspoilt among London's smaller theatres.
