Eighties-inspired synth duo La Roux, who play at the London Scala before resuming a world tour, are a bit like Marmite in that they split opinion straight down the middle. You see, singer Elly Jackson's trademark high-pitched warbling isn't to everyone's taste, nor are the throwback keyboards, her almost intimidating fashion sense and that quite frankly ridiculous Flock-of-Seagulls-style quiff (an ironic nod to There's Something About Mary?). But while 2008's debut single Quicksand lumbered in at No.133 in the UK charts, this spring's catchy In For The Kill made it to No.2 while the summer follow-up, Bulletproof, bagged the top spot until Michael Jackson had the temerity to grab the headlines. The public, it seems, is warming to the distinctive Brixton-born girl who can't decline her French nouns (it should, of course, be La Rousse). And with electro synth pop all the rage at the moment - think Little Boots - it seems La Roux, like Marmite, will garner enough support to justify staying on our shelves.
