| Shakespeare would have found rich material in the backstabbing orators of the French revolution, but since he lived a little early, Glyn Maxwell has taken the opportunity to write this new play for the Bard's old theatre. This one is set under Robespierre, at the height of the Terror, when young magistrate Gamelin finds that friendships are hard to sustain when one is being offered absolute power. Like Shakespeare, Maxwell has the ability to write rhyming couplets that retain the rhythms of everyday speech, and his first play The Lifeblood was a huge hit on the Edinburgh fringe three years ago. |
