Lichtenstein: A RetrospectiveIn 1964, Lichtenstein became the first American to exhibit at the Tate Gallery, and in 2013 the American pop artist reunites with the London gallery for the first time since it staged his 1968 show when people were queuing round the block. Tate Modern reveals the pop artist's hidden side in Lichtenstein: A Retrospective, "the biggest Lichtenstein show since the Guggenheim staged a retrospective in 1993 when the artist was still alive" (The Guardian). Alongside instantly recognisable pop art images - including 'Whaam!', one of the most popular artworks at Tate Modern - are less well known early abstract expressionist paintings which may take visitors by surprise. The scale of his work is sometimes overwhelming; take the enormous 1988 version of the Laocoon; or Interior with Waterlilies, painted in 1991, which at more than four metres wide and approximately three metres high is a vast painting. Queues are likely, once again, for this Lichtenstein exhibition which shows works from private collections, some of which usually hang in collectors' bedrooms, alongside monumental paintings, comic book art, sculptures, abstracts and close to 50 works on paper taken from 70 boxes of works which curators have never been given access to before.
