Life is a DreamThe brilliant Donmar Warehouse is delving into the 17th century to breathe new life into this classic, poetic work by Spanish playwright Pedro Calderon de la Barca, in a new version by Helen Edmundson. Life is a Dream is an allegorical play exploring the nature of human existence - the line between illusion and reality; the extent to which what happens is preordained - as Segismundo, an imprisoned prince, wrestles with the hand he has been dealt in life. Locked in a tower away from the kingdom since birth, he does not understand his fate but we learn that his incarceration is because his father, the king, received a prophecy that Segismundo (Dominic West) would become a brutal ruler. With lofty language, elements of fairytale and urgent, thought-provoking drama, this could be another beauty for the Donmar.

About The Donmar Warehouse

Housed in an impressive red-brick industrial building - at various times a brewery, a banana warehouse and a film studio - this tiny repertory theatre is one of the great success stories of the 1990s. Created as a studio space for the RSC in 1977, it became a shabby but popular fringe theatre in the 1980s, a testing ground for producers with big ideas but little money.
