| If you think 'Stardust' is the exploding sweet sensation of the 1970s that cracks and fizzes on your tongue this exhibition will force you to think again. Working with the NASA funded Stardust mission artist Liliane Lijn allows us to envisage, for the first time, what stardust - the dust and particles of burnt out stars - actually looks like. The American born artist first came to fame in the 1960s as a 'cosmic artist', making a name for herself as one of the pioneers of the transformation of scientific thought into art. Lijn continues her tradition of working in a variety of media, using Aerogel - a material developed by NASA which is 99% air - to capture the dust particles. There are also short films, one featuring an interview with the director of the Stardust Project. Lijn's work has been exhibited internationally with her performing Goddesses exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1986 and works displayed at Tate Britain and Centre Pompidou, Paris. The exhibition takes place across both Riflemaker gallery venues. |
