There's cause for celebration at this year's London Indian Film Festival, which commemorates 100 years of Indian cinema. A century ago, on 3rd May 1913, marked the release of the silent film 'Raja Harishchandra', considered to be the first Indian feature film produced. 100 years on and India is now the world's largest democracy, second largest population and also the world's most prolific film producing nation (releasing around 1,000 pictures a year - that's twice as many as Hollywood). LIFF aims to dispel the myth that this is an industry is confined to the Bollywood stereotype by putting on a far-reaching programme of events that includes thrillers, dramas, comedies, short films, documentaries and - of course - its fair share of song-and-dance blockbusters. LIFF is held at the BFI Southbank and selected cinemas all over the capital. You can also expect seminars, Q&As and live music events throughout the eight-day bonanza.
About BFI Southbank
